Pets are for life

By Nicole Williams
PETS are a lifelong commitment and not just for Christmas – that is the message coming from the Pearcedale RSPCA shelter this Christmas.
While pets might seem like the ideal Christmas gift, Pearcedale RSPCA shelter supervisor Joy Parker said it is unfortunate pets are often given as a surprise gift.
“We recommend that pets are not a surprise gift, at Christmas or anytime,” shelter supervisor Joy Parker said.
“People might not want a pet, may be unable to care for it or it may be an incorrect match for that person.”
Ms Parker said pets are also often surrendered if people have a holiday booked and don’t know what to do with the pet while they’re away.
The Christmas holiday period is the peak time for the RSPCA when more than 16,000 stray, injured and surrendered animals end up in shelters.
As the weather starts to heat up, Ms Parker also reminds pet owners that animals may feel the heat a little more.
“In hot weather, it is really important animals are given shade, whether it is a rabbit, rat, dog or cat,” she said.
Barrie Tap from the Animal Cruelty Hotline said it is important you don’t forget your pets during the festive season and if you’re going away make sure you get someone to keep an eye on your pet.
“Provide fresh water daily, good shelter and don’t leave them alone,” Mr Tap said.
