Mentor mate

CASEY’S learner driver program has successfully mentored its first graduate.
Azean Zain gained her Probationary Licence recently with the assistance of her mentor Colin Davis.
The City of Casey’s L2P learner driver program matches young drivers, who are without appropriate family support, with mentor drivers while they complete their 120 hours of required driving practice.
The program started in April, and supports 23 learners.
Casey’s manager of community safety, Caroline Bell, said the program had been instrumental in promoting community connections for young people and their volunteer mentors.
“We are grateful to the volunteer mentors who have been involved in the program and we are encouraging others to consider becoming a mentor so that more young people can access this innovative program in the future,” Ms Bell said.
“Driving sessions are conducted in a fully maintained and serviced vehicle donated by Berwick Mazda, and learner drivers will receive up to seven professional driving lessons prior to being matched to a volunteer mentor driver.”
Volunteers must have a full Victorian driver’s licence, a safe driving history with no serious offences and be able to commit to the program from a minimum of six months.
All volunteers undertake a VicRoads training program.
