KEITH and Shirley Burns celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary recently.
The long-term Cranbourne residents are not really sure why they got together; they just saw something in each other.
“She was a farmer’s daughter and I was a milk truck driver picking up their milk at their farm,” Mr Burns said.
“We met at a concert at a local hall. We danced, I had twinkle toes those days, I haven’t these days.”
It all sounds so romantic, but there was just a slight little problem.
“I came out and talked to her, but she didn’t like me at all,” Mr Burns said.
“Well, he was a red head and I didn’t particularly like red heads,” Mrs Burns said.
“He was very persistent. He said he was going to marry me. He used to come every day to get the milk so I couldn’t chase him away!”
Persistence prevailed in the end, and after 12 months, Mrs Burns finally said yes.
“I just kept asking when she was going to marry me, that’s all,” Mr Burns said.
“I suppose she said yes because she’s here.”
Mrs Burns said she really didn’t know why she agreed.
“Once I made up my mind that he was the one that was it,” she said.
“It’s lasted 60 years, so I suppose it will be alright,” Mr Burns said.
Mr and Mrs Burns have lived in Cranbourne for 58 years, and were quite involved in the local community.
“I’ve been in scouts for 10 years,” Mr Burns said.
“I was also at International Harvester in Dandenong for 34 years.”
Mrs Burns was involved in mothers’ clubs, and focused on looking after their children.
“We had quite a few children to look after,” Mr Burns said. “Now we have three daughters, 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one more great- grandchild on the way.”
