CRANBOURNE Secondary College’s Year 9 students have been expanding their horizons this year with the Cranbourne Secondary College Journey program.
The program sent the Year 9 students into Melbourne, clipboards and cameras in hand, to research and learn independently about the city. The only stipulation of the project was that the students look to improving the world around them.
The projects explored wide-ranging issues, from homelessness, and busking, to the visual aspects of the city, while other projects took a more local approach looking at ways to raise money for local charities.
The projects were then brought back to the classroom, and over the last few weeks the city-based evidence was intertwined with the original submissions to create each student group’s final presentation.
The school held an event for the projects, on November 9, and continuing the Journey theme the event was called Destinations.
Destinations was hosted by Corey Mathrick and Jessica Callus, students at the school, while the panel of judges was made-up of local identities, Kevin Bradford, City of Casey Councillor, Di Wyatt, Secretary of Cranbourne Chamber of Commerce, Mandy Stevens, South East Local Learning and Emploment Network, and Kitreena La Brasse, Cranbourne Centrelink.
The Year 9 Fearnley group won the event with their presentation on Busking.
Cranbourne Kmart donated $20 vouchers to the winners of first, second and third, while first place also received the opportunity to present their project to the City of Casey, and possible implementation of their ideas into the community.
