Classic Beard

By Nicole Williams
JENNY Beard had a win of a different kind at the Age Caulfield Guineas on 9 October this year.
The Langwarrin South resident won first prize in the Classic Lady category of Fashions on the Field.
“It was quite good to win,” Mrs Beard said.
“I made my outfit and have been entering for a few years,” she said.
The same outfit was also successful for Mrs Beard at the Moonee Valley Cox Plate on 23 October, taking home a third place in the Head Turning Hats category and a third place in the Ladies Classic Racewear category.
Each year, the 54-year-old makes a new outfit and enters the Fashions on the Field in a number of country and Melbourne Racing Club events.
She has had quite a few wins at country races and was runner up at the Caulfield Cup open category in 2004.
This year’s outfit was made from an original vintage pattern from the 1950s.
The mother of four started sewing when she had children and is largely self-taught.
“It is a hobby I do for myself and my girls and my son,” Mrs Beard said.
The Classic Lady category is the newest Fashions on the Field category, which is open to the more mature and sophisticated woman.
