CASEY police were shocked and disgusted when a Cranbourne mother crashed with seven children packed into her car- including three in the boot.
Sergeant Pat McGavigan from Casey Highway Patrol said he was in disbelief that three children – a 13-year-old boy and two 14-year-old boys- were in the boot of the unregistered Mitsubishi sedan when it collided with a parked car in Howdon Drive in Cranbourne about 8pm on 17 October.
He said he hadn’t seen anything like it before.
“I was disgusted, basically. Why would people put someone in the boot of the car?” Sgt McGavigan said.
“It’s absolutely ludicrous.”
The driver, a 35-year-old Cranbourne woman, is alleged to be unlicensed and also alleged to have alcohol in her system at the time of the collision.
Inside the car were a 10-year-old boy, a 14-year-old boy, a 13-year-old girl and a 14-year-old girl.
One of the boys in the car and one in the boot were the woman’s sons, Sgt McGavigan said.
Five of the children were taken to hospital with minor injuries, and Sgt McGavigan said it was lucky matters were not worse.
“Imagine if someone had struck her vehicle from behind,” he said.
Sgt McGavigan said the place for luggage was no place for passengers unless there were appropriate seats with restraints.
“We’re just thankful this isn’t worse than what it was.”
