Helpers weren’thorsing around

By Emma Sun
A WORKING bee was held at George Smith’s property in Cranbourne on the weekend in a further bid to help Mr Smith look after his seven horses.
Animal welfare worker Barrie Tapp said that despite a smaller turnout this time around it was quite a good day.
“The smaller numbers didn’t matter as we were able to get quite a bit done,” Mr Tapp said.
“We finished the cleaning up part of it, did the grass and a few of the fences.” Mr Smith, a passionate horse lover, has bone cancer and finds it difficult to care for his horses.
After the News reported on his plea for help, Mr Tapp received more than 100 calls from people willing to volunteer, and since then a roster has been put up where two volunteers turn up twice a day to feed the horses.
“I would like to thank the volunteers very much on behalf of George; a great job was done because of them,” Mr Tapp said.
“The horses are in excellent condition. TREW Horse Rescue is providing summer rugs for all the horses which is good. The volunteers have been absolutely fantastic throughout the whole time this has been going on.”
Mr Tapp said Mr Smith is elated about everything that’s going on.
“We’re really keeping the ball rolling. The horses are looking fantastic at the moment and very healthy,” Mr Tapp said.
“They’re living a life of luxury now, just enjoying life.”
