IT’S not just about dancing the night away at the Cranbourne Blue Light Disco.
The volunteer-driven committee is also providing a helping hand to local school students.
The popularity of the disco has surged during the three years since it was rejuvenated, with about 300 young people from Kooweerup to Cranbourne attending the discos.
Committee member and local policeman Senior Constable Brett Owen said while the discos provided a fun and safe night out for young people, the aim was to give back to the community.
In the last 12 months, about $2000 had been donated to local families, he said.
Through money raised at the discos, the committee is able to provide funds to students whose families cannot afford to send them on school camps, and also scholarships to ease the long list of new items needed for the transition from primary to secondary school.
“It’s all about giving back to the community. I think we’re doing well,” Sen Const Owen said.
“They do come from all over Casey, so it’s really good interest from a wide area.
Sen Const Owen said the committee had discussed hosting other Blue Light events, not just discos, and formulating a plan for the interaction of young people.
“We’re looking forward to seeing what we can come up with.”
The discos are aimed for school students from Grade 4 to Year 8 and are held every third Saturday of the month, except for December, at the Cranbourne Hall.
