YOUNG readers have been given a boost at the Cranbourne Library.
Library staff have bought books for the Let’s Read literacy program after receiving a $500 grant from The Hunt Club community fund.
The Let’s Read program aims to support and empower parents to read with their babies and young children.
The program was developed by the Smith family and the Murdoch Centre of Community Child Health.
Early years outreach officer at Cranbourne Library, Sandra Smith, said it was beneficial for parents to read to their children.
“Evidence suggests the earlier families start reading to their babies, the better off their life chances will be,” Ms Smith said.
“The Let’s Read program promotes shared reading and also introduces families to the library, many of whom have not been in a library since they were at school.”
Community groups in Cranbourne are invited to submit applications for the 2010 The Hunt Club Community Fund, with $19,000 available. For more information visit www.huntclub .com.au.
