AN INFLUX of odour complaints has seen the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) conduct an immediate investigation of the Hallam Road landfill site.
EPA officers have made daily visits to the site during the past two weeks to carry out “odour work”, since complaints flooded in after a recent meeting in Hampton Park to discuss an application to build a compost plant at the site of the landfill. So far this year, the EPA has received 129 complaints about the Hallam Road landfill.
SITA Environmental Solutions has an application to build a compost plant worth about $70 to $80 million next to the landfill, which has caused angst among some members of the community who say they could not trust SITA to manage another facility.
But SITA has said the facility was especially designed for the site on Hallam Road.
Hampton Park resident Tony O’Hara said he was pleased to see the EPA had stepped up to the plate.
“I believe the EPA is really hot on the trot with this and is very concerned about it. It is very pleasing to see,” he said.
Mr O’Hara said the smell from the landfill may be reduced, but he was not confident it could ever stop completely.
The EPA encouraged members of the community to report any pollution issues by calling them on 9695 2777.
