SAFETY will be enhanced at the Cranbourne Training Centre with the installation of new automatic gates and a bullring.
The two automatic sliding gates, worth $70,000, will be installed at the Grant Street and Cemetery Road entrances and are designed to prevent runaway horses from escaping the complex.
The existing bullring, used as a training tool for young and unruly horses, is located next to the main walkway for horses entering the training tracks and can be a safety hazard for horses and people.
Cranbourne MP Jude Perera announced the safety upgrades on Tuesday, with the State Government contributing most of the $120,000 worth of upgrades and Racing Victoria and Country Racing Victoria chipping in.
“The old bullring requires major maintenance to bring it up to standard and the new bullring will be installed in a better location, which means it can be used during standard training hours,” Mr Perera said.
Racing Victoria chief executive Rob Hines said the projects would improve the safety and wellbeing of horses and industry workers at the Cranbourne Training Centre, which is the largest in Australia.
“Both the automatic gates and bullring will reduce the element of risk at the Cranbourne Training Centre, while providing an enhanced training asset for the local racing community,” Mr Hines said.
