A learning cycle

SIMONE Douglas is using pedal power to help raise money to support children’s literacy projects in Cambodia.
The Cranbourne resident will take part in the Credit Union Foundation Australia (CUFA) Cambodia Leadership Challenge 2010 from July 19 to 31.
Simone is preparing for the four-day cycling trek, about 80 kilometres per day, from Siem Reap in the north west of Cambodia to Battambang, where she will engage in CUFA’s children’s financial literacy project work.
Community credit union mecu is sponsoring Simone, covering her travel, accommodation and meal costs.
Simone will join nine other participants from credit unions across Australia. Simone, who works as a community banking manager at mecu in Kew, said her first challenge was to raise $3000 before she leaves for Cambodia.
“I have always wanted to take part in something to assist others, but have never fundraised and have been overwhelmed by the generosity of people willing to support this challenge,” she said.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for me to contribute to a project which will make a difference to children’s lives in Cambodia and at the same time increase my leadership skills and experience of another country and culture.”
mecu General Manager Development Rowan Dowland commended Simone for her initiative in volunteering to take part in the challenge.
“mecu is pleased to support Simone in recognition of the valuable work this project provides to Cambodian communities and to promote and develop leadership and community responsibility values in our staff,” he said.
Simone said she was already close to reaching her target thanks to the Cranbourne Turf Club, KS Environmental, Cranbourne Small Business Advisors, family, friends, co-workers, businesses and the community.
