Courage and cost

By Bridget Brady
THE courage and gallantry of people who served for Australia should never be forgotten.
Those words from Cranbourne RSL past president Don Davis could not have been more pertinent for Frankston resident Sherill Cook, who attended her first Dawn Service on Sunday after finding her grandfather’s war medals a few weeks ago.
Ms Cook said she didn’t know much about her grandfather’s time during WWI, but felt inspired to attend Cranbourne’s Anzac Day Dawn Service when her family found the medals, which were still in the original envelope.
“It just made it more special. I can’t listen to the Last Post without crying,” she said.
About 300 people gathered for Cranbourne’s Dawn Service on Sunday, and guest speaker Mr Davis spoke about the sacrifice of soldiers and their actions that affected many Australians from every age, race and social class.
“These men and women had faith in the future. Let us never forget them,” he said.
Today, many Australians still took for granted the independence of a country that so many died for, Mr Davis said.
“As Australians, we often take for granted our freedom.”
A large crowd of about 1000 people attended the Anzac Day march and service later in the morning at the cenotaph on High Street, and watched as the RAAF Roulettes flew over.
