Kids go potty

GRADE 3 students at Tooradin Primary School are caring for the coast, potting mangrove seedlings at the school.
Dr Tim Ealey, from the Western Port Seagrass Partnership, visited the class and explained how to grow mangroves. Using adjusted milk cartons as pots, the students made a mix of dirt and sea grass, packed their pots with the mixture and potted the seedlings.
The stems and roots are easily broken, but teachers were proud to report there were no mangrove casualties during the process.
The seedlings will grow at the school before students plant them in a coastal area in December to help prevent degradation and reduce the amount of silt and mud entering Western Port.
