ABOUT 1500 people turned out to the Cranbourne Racecourse for the inaugural Trios Cranbourne Gift on Sunday.
Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive Neil Bainbridge said the track was in outstanding condition for the athletics event.
Canadian runner Ira Thomson took out the $5000 Trios Cranbourne Gift.
The major drawcard for the event, Anthony Alozie, did not win his heat.
“I think those people who turned out would have had a great day,” Mr Bainbridge said.
Organisers hope the event will continue in the future as a lead-up even to the Stawell Gift, and Mr Bainbridge said positive feedback from the Victorian Athletics League “speaks volumes of the quality of the venue we’ve got here in Cranbourne.”
Hot rod and vintage car displays were among the other entertainment on Sunday.
