THE vicar of a Cranbourne church says he has been heartened by generous donations to an appeal to revamp the historic church building.
Plans have been drawn up for a major facelift for St John’s Anglican Church in Cranbourne, which was first constructed in 1866, and a car boot sale, which will be held this weekend to continue the fundraising efforts.
The appeal was launched in July last year and $164,000 has been donated so far.
Reverend David Powys said he was delighted with the contributions and dedications so far, which he added, were largely donated from the pockets of church members.
“We’ve been quite heartened by the results,” Rev Powys said.
The total cost of the project is estimated at $1.9 million and the Diocese of Melbourne has committed $400,000 to the project.
The much-anticipated upgr-ades would be fully integrated and include a worship centre to accommodate 300 people, education area, and modern amenities, Rev Powys said.
Importantly, the historical church building, which is about 150 years old, would retain its historical image, Rev Powys said, and also service the wider Cranbourne community.
“It’s been talked about for 40 to 45 years and there have been lots of false starts, so we have a real challenge with credibility and we’re working very hard on that.
“It will be a great facility for Cranbourne,” he said.
Rev Powys said the project would be taken to the next level in the coming months, with plans to be submitted to the council.
“The diocese is very excited and supportive and they are keen for us to push forward.”
As the project started to take shape, Rev Powys said he hoped there would be a new surge of support for the appeal.
The car boot sale will be held on 20 February from 9am to 1pm at the St John’s Anglican Church on the corner of Childers and Russell streets in Cranbourne.
Morning tea and a sausage sizzle will be available.
To book a site for the car boot sale, call Dianne on 5995 9763.
