Record crowds at the rodeo

By Bridget Cook
THRILLS, spills and action-packed entertainment attracted huge crowds to the 11th annual Cranbourne Rodeo on Saturday night.
While gate numbers were not taken, event organiser Shawn Mathrick said it was the biggest crowd he had seen at the event in its 11-year history. “I think because we had the extreme heat last year many made sure they came down this year to see what it’s all about,” he said.
Known as Victoria’s largest rodeo, there was a total of $15,000 up for grabs for competitors.
More than 120 competitors battled it out in sections including bare-back riding, saddle bronc riding, barrel racing and the crowd favourite – bull riding.
“We had a first this year … kids about 12 and 13 years old rode bucking ponies as well,” he said.
Mr Mathrick said the event drew a large variety of people. “There were families, singles, young people and particularly a lot of older generation people over 60 years old,” he said. “It attracts plenty of locals down as many of them have never seen anything like it. It’s a really great night out with all the entertainment and amusements.”
Mr Mathrick said the future looks bright for the Cranbourne Rodeo and hoped to expand the entertainment next year. See Page 54 for more pictures and action.
