Mum takes aim at the blues

By Bridget Brady
THERESA Davis’ own experience as a single mother who had depression has inspired her to help other mums who may be feeling isolated.
The Cranbourne mother of five has been a single mum for about 10 years and found herself with depression, which she had for about two years.
Ms Davis, 42, said it was easy for single or isolated mums to start feeling down, and will offer her support for other mums by holding an information day in March.
“I find that it’s really easy just to drop the kids off at school and come home and you don’t get out, especially if you are new to the area,” she said.
Ms Davis, whose children are now aged between 21 and nine, said some mothers may not have many social outlets or had little time for any of their own activities.
“It’s so easy to get into that and when I was depressed it’s very hard to get out of it.”
Ms Davis said she hoped to get speakers from Beyond Blue at the information day and that further meetings about every three months would eventuate.
“Having been through it I recognise the signs and I can prevent it from happening. I want to give other mums those skills.
“There is help out there.”
Ms Davis has named her project Mum’s The Word, and is happy to hear from anyone who may have ideas for the information day in March, or people who want to help out.
