RED Cross has asked residents to donate responsibly, after reports of messy and overflowing donation bins near the Merinda Park Railway Station.
Red Cross group regional retail manager Stephen Lavender said Red Cross did its best to keep sites clean, but overflowing bins were a problem it faced at this time of year.
“It’s unfortunate that’s the situation. We endeavour as best we can to keep the sites clean and tidy and generally the bins are cleared at least twice a week,” Mr Lavender said.
“But we can’t have total control. We really appreciate people donating responsibly and donating the sort of things that are suitable for us- largely clothing and accessories. We appeal to people to be donating responsibly.”
Ideally, people could donate at the Red Cross store on High Street in Cranbourne, Mr Lavender said.
“Of course it (store) is not open 24/7 and is not always convenient.”
Metro Trains spokeswoman Lanie Harris said the dumpster at Merinda Park Railway Station would be removed permanently after it was set alight on Monday night. Cranbourne North resident Jan Dodd said the messy dumpster at the railway station and the Red Cross bins made the site look like “the extension of the tip”.
“It’s a shocker. It is embarrassing for our town,” Ms Dodd said.
