YOUNG drivers who do not have someone to supervise them on the roads will soon be able to utilise Casey’s new driver mentoring program.
The City of Casey is seeking volunteer mentor drivers to help with its L2P- Learner Driver Mentor Program.
The program has been developed to help young drivers between the ages of 16 to 21 obtain their probationary licence. Learner drivers will receive up to seven professional driving lessons before being matched to a volunteer mentor driver, mayor Lorraine Wreford said.
“The program aims to help disadvantaged young drivers who do not have someone to supervise them, to achieve the required 120 hours of driver training required to apply for their probationary licence,” Cr Wreford said.
“The L2P program is a wonderful way to help young people in need and a fantastic road safety initiative that will help to ensure Casey’s roads are a safe place for all road users.”
Berwick Mazda has donated a vehicle for the driving sessions.
Volunteer mentor drivers will be required to act in a coaching role to assist young drivers to gain practical on-road driving experience.
They must have a current, full driver’s licence and a safe driving history with no serious offences, and be able to commit to the program for a minimum of six months.
All volunteers will undergo a VicRoads training program and will be required to undertake a police check and children check.
The council’s program is provided in partnership with VicRoads and the Transport Accident Commission.
