FARMERS in Casey affected by the drought could receive council rate subsidies of up to 30 per cent through a drought assistance program.
Affected farmers are encouraged to find out if they are eligible for the Victorian Government’s Drought Assistance Package, which is being offered in recognition that many farmers have faced tough circumstances during recent years.
Casey mayor Lorraine Wreford said the tough conditions had caused havoc with crops and livestock.
“The subsidy is available to assist farmers to save money on their rates, so they are able to use the money for more urgent purchases or repayments,” Cr Wreford said. The municipal rate subsidies are available to eligible farmers who would receive emergency payments or exceptional circumstances relief payments from Centrelink between 1 April 2009 and 1 June 2010.
A farm improvement grants scheme to support drought-affected farmers to make significant on-farm infrastructure improvements is also available.
The grants of up to $1000 would be available for farmers who received an exceptional circumstances relief payment from Centrelink between 22 October 2009 and 30 June 2010.
To check eligibility on the subsidy call City of Casey customer service on 9705 5200.
