Binge drinkers in focus

THE message is clear this holiday season: youth drink driving will not be tolerated.
As many young people receive their learners or drivers licence before the Christmas and New Year party season, the City of Casey in conjunction with Victoria Police has released a new DVD to deter youth drink driving.
Aimed at secondary school students, the film explores the trials of ‘Todd’ a young driver who sustains permanent brain in-juries after stealing and later crashing a car under the influence of alcohol.
The DVD will be used in activity-based workshops for Years 9 and 10 students across the City of Casey, as well as young people in local sporting clubs, to help get the message across.
“We have seen too many young lives needlessly lost and shattered in our community,” River Gum Ward councillor Lynette Keleher said.
“This is an extremely worthwhile program aimed at increasing community safety and reducing the crime, violence and harms associated with binge drinking.”
City of Casey youth and family services manager Lee McIntosh is pleased the DVD is now available to assist in the development strategies for young people to make considered choices when out partying.
The DVD also explores many relevant issues for young people including how to party and travel safely, the effects of alcohol and other drugs, accepting responsibility for your actions and how to look after your friends in life-threatening situations.
