TOORADIN Primary School students have been whipping up a storm in the kitchen as part of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program.
Students take an active involvement in the program by growing, harvesting, preparing and sharing seasonal fruit and vegetables and learning about healthy eating habits.
Students have been using facilities at Kooweerup Secondary College while their purpose-built kitchen is being constructed at the Tooradin school.
Last week students used produce from the school garden to cook broad bean risotto, special salads creating their own dressings, cheesy bites and spicy battered cauliflower.
Program co-ordinator Rachel Davis said the unique program allowed the children to extend their literacy and numeracy skills through practical, hands on learning.
They also developed co-operation and team work skills with the help of community volunteers and cook Shannon Cassidy.
“Parents have been pleased by the range of foods their children are tasting and the students themselves look forward to learning cooking techniques and sharing a different feast each week,” Ms Davis said.
