A SMASH in Devon Meadows last week is a timely reminder for Casey motorists to take care on the roads during the holiday season, a fire brigade captain says.
A man was cut out of his station wagon and airlifted to hospital after a two-car collision on the corner of Fisheries Road and Baxter Tooradin Road in Devon Meadows about 6pm on Friday.
Devon Meadows Fire Brigade captain Andrew Swain said the accident could serve as a reminder for residents to slow down. “We turn on the TV every night and it’s getting drummed into us at a national level, at the same time in the City of Casey we hope that people just take that extra care to get home to their families,” Mr Swain said.
He also encouraged those travelling on unfamiliar roads this holiday season to drive accordingly.
On Friday the Devon Meadows brigade was supported by the Tooradin crew and the Langwarrin rescue crew, who cut the man out of his car.
Mr Swain said the damage to the station wagon was extensive, and it would have been a write-off after the rescue crew removed the doors.
The female and boy in the other car, a Range Rover, were treated for injuries that were not serious, Mr Swain said.
“It was fairly chaotic when we got there because the roads were still open.”
Mr Swain said the intersection was a hot spot for smashes, despite recent upgrades including lighting and a turning lane.
The road was a busy one and the high speed meant the smashes were usually bad ones when they occurred, Mr Swain said. “It’s just one of those intersections that tends to attract car accidents.”
