Police prosecutor Senior Constable Aimee Finnerty told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court Mohammed Kaiyum, 36, made threats to kill his wife after returning home from a morning prayer meeting.
His wife then hid in a bedroom closet, before he stabbed the knife through the wooden door.
He then threatened to kill himself by drinking weed killer.
The incident, which occurred on May 17, was reported by his wife at the Cranbourne Police Station the next day.
Kaiyum pleaded guilty to one count of making threats to kill, two counts of criminal damage, one count of assault with a weapon and one count of unlawful assault.
Since the incident Kaiyum has taken part in counselling sessions with Relationships Australia and has attempted to undertake sessions with a psychologist.
Magistrate Edwin Batt fined Kaiyum $250 and told him to continue counselling.
“It seems like it was a one-off situation,” Mr Batt said.
“This has been proven by statements by your peers, religious and community leaders.”
