THE Big Red Barbecue on 13 November aimed to tackle obesity and kidney disease and promote healthy eating.
According to Kidney Health Australia, the organisation behind the campaign, one in three Australian adults are at increased risk of developing chronic kidney disease and over 40 Australians die of kidney failure each day.
Anne Wilson, Kidney Health Australia managing director and chief executive officer attended the barbecue and said that diet was a vital part of managing kidney disease.
“…we have chosen to highlight the Aussie barbecue, a traditional family, sporting and community social activity as a focus point to promote healthy eating and encourage a greater use of fresh vegetables, fruit, fish, chicken, lean meats and salads as a preventative measure,” Ms Wilson said.
Local MP Jude Perera, who had a kidney transplant earlier this year, met with other Victorian MPs in the Parliamentary Gardens to take part in the campaign.
Mr Perera tried out a new environmental barbecue and posed with Kidney Health Australia’s children’s ambassadors Billy Kidney and ventriloquist Lindi Jane.
