WHEELCHAIR-bound children living in Casey can enjoy another liberty swing after the second of its kind was opened at Casey Fields playground recently.
Variety The Children’s Charity donated the swing for children in wheelchairs to use free of charge.
The swings are worth $25,000 and the cost of installation is about $15,000. This swing was the 40th liberty swing that the charity has installed in Victoria, with the other swing in Casey located at Narre Warren.
Variety program manager Kerry Bradley said a key unlocked the swing and wheelchairs were reversed into it and safety straps were put in place.
“This was something devised in the 90s as a method by which children who were bound to wheelchairs could enjoy something that us able people have always taken for granted – to sit on a swing and swing away,” Mr Bradley said.
“The considerable growth in the municipality meant the City of Casey was an ideal place to have a liberty swing,”
Mayfield Ward councillor Amanda Stapledon said the council was grateful to Variety for providing the swing.
“Now all children can play at the new playground and enjoy the beautiful surroundings and play equipment,” she said.
The key to the swing is available at the kiosk at Casey Fields.
