Clean-up call

THE CFA is urging Casey residents to clean up their gardens in preparation for the upcoming fire season.
In response to the decade-long drought, which has left the state exposed to fire danger, firefighters are stressing the importance of reducing fuel loads around homes.
CFA operations officer Cliff O’Connor says understanding the risk around a property is especially important to guide fire plans if a fire is threatening.
“The first step is identifying the major fire risks near your house,” he said.
“You should walk around your neighbourhood and become familiar with areas of shrubs, plants and trees. The path a fire takes depends on where the fuel is, so it’s crucial you have a solid garden clean up now, in order to protect your homes later,” Mr O’Connor said.
Mr O’Connor said the cleaner the house is the less chance of direct flame and radiant heat setting it on fire.
“All Victorians have a role to play in protecting themselves, their properties and their family from bushfire.”
