STUDENTS and staff at Courtenay Garden Primary School went wild last week during National Literacy and Numeracy Week celebrations.
The school kicked off festivities on Tuesday for National Reading Day with a range of activities based on the theme A Story Telling Safari. Students participated in safari-based literacy activities including storytelling, recount writing and craft activities, and in the afternoon switched to numeracy mode and worked on problem solving.
Courtenay Gardens Primary School Literacy co-ordinator Belinda Harrington said for all these sessions they combined students into multi age and mixed class groupings.
“This encourages enjoyment, friendship and co-operative skills between younger and older members of the school,” she said.
A book character and number dress-up day was then held on Wednesday 2 which saw students and teachers dress up in a variety of creative and inspirational costumes. Ms Harrington said National Literacy and Numeracy Week, which ran from 31 August until 6 September, gave schools the opportunity to get involved in a range of activities to develop stronger literacy and numeracy skills.
