Loads of patience

By Bridget Brady
MOTORISTS who use disabled parking at a Cranbourne shopping centre are getting stuck in their spots for up to half an hour as trucks trap drivers when making deliveries.
Tony Waugh said truck and van drivers block those who use disabled parking at the back of a shop at Centro Shopping Centre in Cranbourne by using the space as loading zones when making deliveries .
Mr Waugh, 38, said it was frustrating people had to stay put and wait for a driver to return to their vehicle.
“The longest I’ve waited has been about 35 minutes. It causes traffic jams, it’s just stupid. You’ve just got to sit there and wait,” he said.
Besides the inconvenience of being stuck there, Mr Waugh said it was potentially dangerous because some people with medical conditions may have to get away quickly.
The Cannons Creek resident uses a walking frame on wheels and said the poor design of the car park and driver behaviour were the reasons the space was used as a loading zone.
Neither the Casey Council nor the shopping centre was responsible for the management of the car park. The council said was a privately owned car park.
“The design is not very appropriate. I have friends who use it (car park). There should be better access.”
Mr Waugh said he was also “blown away” to see a forklift operating in the car park area.
“I’m surprised no one has been hurt yet.”
