KAITLYN Walker wants to use her artistic talents to raise awareness about the conditions people face in impoverished countries.
The Year 11 St Peter’s College student wants to hold an art exhibition to help fund a trip overseas so she can lend a hand where she can.
“I want to go to India or Africa or other countries to help. After school I want to hold an art exhibition with pictures of poverty and how it affects people,” she said.
“I’m really inspired to help people out there less fortunate than I am.”
Kaitlyn’s chief artistic talent is drawing and her pieces are mostly copied photographs.
“I started art classes in Grade 6 and I’ve always had a bit of a talent in it.”
Kaitlyn received a scholarship for the McClelland Galleryin Langwarrin, where she hasher art classes.
And success came this year when she won her first art competition.
She got a first prize in the Casey Creations competition for her piece called A Moment to Treasure and also won a first prize in the Dandenong Art Show.
“A Moment to Treasure is of two little girls in a doorway. I just like the lights and the tones that captured the narrative really well.
“It was really great to win something. The awards have encouraged me because I know that it is possible to be recognised for it.”
Kaitlyn said she wanted to do a bachelor of fine arts and combine it with teaching when she finished school.
Kaitlyn said she was a perfectionist, which could sometimes disadvantage her.
“It can be bad at times because I have to make sure I do things at a high standard and it takes a little while.
“I always wish I could change things when I’m finished but generally I’m really proud of it at the end.”
