CASEY’S top traffic cop has urged drivers to take care on the road, saying tragedies like the weekend’s horror smash could happen to anyone.
As the Major Collision Investigation Unit investigate the cause of the crash, Sergeant Pat McGavigan from Casey Traffic Management Unit (TMU) said the Lynbrook smash was a “tragedy and a complete waste of young lives”.
Sgt McGavigan said some young drivers believed they were invincible.
“Young drivers believe it will never happen to them and this proves that it can,” he said.
“You are in control of what you do.”
The intersection was known to police as a trouble spot due to the high volume of traffic it carried.
“Any high volume intersection is a potential for conflict.”
Police said there had been 11 reported collisions at the intersection of Ormond and Hallam roads since January 2008 and 30 June this year.
The loss of four lives on the weekend brought Casey’s number of road fatalities this year to eight, one more than the same time last year.
“I ask that they (motorists) take heed of this warning as I do not want them involved in a collision like this. Do not believe for one moment that it will never happen to them as there is normally an innocent party to most collisions.”
