Safety first

THE safety of Cranbourne RSL members is at risk when turning from the South Gippsland Highway into the clubrooms, its president says.
Dandenong Cranbourne RSL sub-branch president Barry Jones wants a left-hand turn lane built on the South Gippsland Highway to improve the safety of motorists.
Mr Jones said high-speed traffic posed a danger to those turning into the service lane. “They (cars) are coming behind you at a fair speed and a lot of our clientele are elderly persons and we just think it’s pretty dangerous,” he said.
“It’s an accident waiting to happen.”
Mr Jones said RSL members have wanted a left-hand turn lane for about four years.
Mayfield Ward councillor Amanda Stapledon said she supported the RSL’s request for a turning lane. “Veterans, their families and visitors need to feel confident that when slowing down to turn into the RSL service lane that they can do so safely,” Cr Stapledon said.
“Cranbourne RSL is situated at the gateway to South Gippsland and Phillip Island and encounters high speed and heavy traffic.”
Casey Council will ask Cranbourne police for a traffic report on the site, and then write to VicRoads.
