TWO puppies left for dead in a dumpster are settling in at their new temporary home in Tooradin.
A worker at a factory heard whimpers from the dumpster at a factory in Carrum Downs last week and called the Animal Cruelty Hotline.
The puppies were taken to the man’s friend and Tooradin dog breeder Leanne Lewis, who said the dumping was “disgusting”.
She said the puppies would not have been older than two weeks because one of them had not opened its eyes.
“I have no idea how anyone could do this.
“How hard would it have been to do the same thing but at a vet store or an animal shelter,” Ms Lewis said.
She said the pups might be Burmese mountain dogs, and would check to see if they might even be pure-breds, in which case they would be quite valuable.
Barrie Tapp, from the Animal Cruelty Hotline, agreed that anyone who had unwanted puppies or kittens should always leave them at an animal shelter instead of leaving them for dead.
“It’s absolutely atrocious to see this happen when all someone has to do is take them to a shelter and leave them there,” Mr Tapp said.
“Ring us and we’ll do our best to help them any way we possibly can.”
Ms Lewis has named the male puppies Dozer and Rig and said she would keep them until they were about eight weeks old.
Despite their ordeal, Ms Lewis said the puppies were happy and healthy.
If anyone has unwanted pets they should call the Animal Cruelty Hotline on 1800 751 770.
