Double blow

By Bridget Brady
TWO months after being robbed, a Lynbrook businessman is again counting the costs after fire destroyed $50,000 worth of equipment on the weekend.
Fire broke out along Evans Road in Lynbrook and jumped the South Gippsland Highway about 5pm on Saturday.
Peter Moon, the owner of Ebaz Marine Works and Jetty Constructions, said he was devastated by the damage to the equipment, including a 4WD fork lift, tractor and trailer.
“I came back from Tasmania as soon as I got the call,” Mr Moon said.
The Hampton Park resident said while he was distressed about the damage, it was important to put things into perspective following the shocking weekend.
“I’m still pretty devastated about it. But I’ve lost nothing compared to others.”
While the Cranbourne region escaped relatively unscathed compared to surrounding areas, including Narre Warren South, and Narre Warren North, locals felt the enormity of the blaze near the highway and helped any way they could.
Outdoor Deco owner Mark Albress said passers-by helped save his business.
“I saw the fire when it crossed the highway and I can’t tell you how lucky I am,” Mr Albress said.
“People were putting out spot fires all over the place. They saved us for sure … it was frightening and pretty freaky.”
Bryan Taylor, a sub-contractor for Mr Moon, lost his truck in the fire.
“I came as fast as I could. But I could not see through the smoke on the highway and the road was closed, so I parked the car and walked up,” Mr Taylor said.
“My truck and one trailer are completely burnt out. It’s buggered my system completely.
“I’m 75 next month, there’s no way known I can start again. I get enough just to keep me out of mischief … I had that truck for 14 years. It never missed a beat.
“But while it’s a kick in the guts for me, it’s nothing compared to what others have been through.”
Cranbourne CFA fire officer John Townsend said it was a busy day for fire crews on Saturday.
“It was a huge day … I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Police said the fire along the highway was not suspicious.
