Hit-run victim

By Lia Bichel
A HIT-and-run incident has left a Cranbourne man searching for answers after he was left with broken knees and unable to work.
At 9.20pm on 7 December, 25-year-old tow-truck driver Shawn Curtis was helping move a truck out of a ditch at Evan Road, Cranbourne, when he was struck from behind by a white utility.
“I can’t remember how it felt,” Mr Curtis said.
“All I know is that when I came to, I was lying next to my truck. I tried to stand and a big rush of pain went through my legs and I fell back down.”
Mr Curtis was taken to Southeastern Private Hospital, where he is still being treated.
“I have to get screws, wires, and pins in my legs,” he said. “I have to learn to walk again.”
Besides enduring the physical pain, Curtis will not be able to work for six to 18 months, and fears he may be unable to financially support his wife and 14-month-old son.
“I am the only provider for my family,” he said.
“I should get support from WorkCover or TAC, but it won’t cover everything. “I will lose money and could lose my house. I could lose everything.”

Police are investigating the incident and said the utility would have substantial damage to the front panel and bumper area as a result of the impact.
Curtis said he hoped the driver would come forward and is staying optimistic going into the Christmas holidays. “I try to look at the bright side of things,” he said. “Things could be worse. I am just glad I am not dead.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact Cranbourne police on 5991 0600.
