A CRANBOURNE disability organisation will receive $3500 after it backed a winner in the three-week greyhound event The Great Chase.
Kalimna Cranbourne Support Options followed Cranbourne North greyhound Serbo Delight during the series. Serbo Delight finished in second place at last week’s grand final at The Meadows.
About 140 Victorian groups that cater for the intellectually or physically disabled participated in the sixth Great Chase series, which was conducted at greyhound racing clubs across the state, including Cranbourne, during November.
Officials at each venue randomly assigned greyhounds to each of the community groups.
Support worker at Kalimna Cranbourne Support Options Jan Tandy said the organisation would use the money to offer more individualised options for people who use the service.
Ms Tandy said staff and participants enjoyed the “buzz” of attending races and were thrilled about the results.
“It was fantastic, the guys just felt a part of it and it was really good to be allocated a dog and go through the whole series supporting it,” Ms Tandy said.
“It’s also an outing for our guys. It’s about life experiences and we want to empower people into the community, not segregate them.”
The organisation received $2000 for Serbo Delight’s second place in the grand final and a further $1500 for heat and final wins.
This was the second year the organisation participated in The Great Chase.
