Pack a garden picnic

THERE is a lot to celebrate at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Cranbourne this month.
On Sunday 23 November 23 Casey residents are encouraged to pack a picnic and head to the gardens to celebrate the launch of the Woodland Picnic area, Garden Grubs Kids Club, and brand new four-kilometre bike track that winds its way through the native bushland.
Chris Russell, director at the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne said the program is a great way for families to introduce their children to the wonders of nature as well as have the chance to play, kick a ball or simply enjoy outdoor time together.
Picnic goers will be able to enjoy the newly opened Woodlands Picnic Area, which was designed by landscape architects Urban Initiatives and is one of four projects that make up the second stage of the Australian Garden.
The area has large open grasslands, barbecues and a children’s playground. The area is surrounded by plants and bushland vegetation.
The activities day will also celebrate the launch of the Garden Grubs Kids Club, which is run by the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne and caters to primary school children.
Jo Flye, co-ordinator of the Garden Grubs Kids Club, said children in the club get to dig soil, look for worms and insects, and take part in the planting process.
“The kids club is a great opportunity for kids to get together in the award-winning Australian Garden and learn about gardening,” she said.
The celebrations will also include didgeridoo lessons, face-painting, a free sausage sizzle, and games and activities coordinated by Camp Australia.
