In tune to keep school kids safe

By Lia Bichel
RESIDENTS of the City of Casey gathered to celebrate child safety at Bulla Bulla Centre in Cranbourne East.
Hundreds attended the event, which began with the City of Casey presenting the Kids ‘R’ Safe Retailer Award to Angela Eland of Baby Essentials in Cranbourne for its commitment to promoting child safety in its store. The baby store beat follow nominees Bunnings Narre Warren, Babyco Narre Warren, Baby Bunting Narre Warren and Toy World Narre Warren South.
“This award is a wonderful opportunity to recognize local retailers who offer outstanding advice or products that promote safety for young children,” said City of Casey Manager Community Safety Caroline Bell.
“The award aims to ensure a range of safe products are available in Casey retail outlets and to increase retailer interest in addressing child injury prevention through the promotion and sale of safe children’s products. The award also aims to increase community awareness and use of child safety products.”
Following the award presentation, more than 200 students from seven local primary schools performed safety songs at the SafeStart Concert for National Kidsafe Day.
The children’s performances were judged by the songs’ composer, Peter Dowler, who is also a representative from CFA and the YMCA which manages the Casey ARC.
Cranbourne West Primary School won first prize for their performance of a fire safety song titled ‘hot, hot, hot!’
The successful event wrapped up Community Safety month by raising awareness of unintentional injuries and the fact that many of them are preventable.
