CRANBOURNE bowlers took the daunting trip to Yarra Glen in this week’s Division One Pennant bowls and, despite throwing out a strong challenge, they could not overcome the top side on their own green.
Cranbourne was very competitive on three rinks with Peter Elgar’s team hitting top form to win by six shots. Lyn Quigg and Brian Gay’s teams were narrowly beaten on their rinks, but there is promise of a good season ahead.
Yarra Glen 99 d Cranbourne 84. P. Elgar 24-18, L. Quigg 24-16, B. Gay 21-26, R. Travica 15-29. Cranbourne (2) was in with a chance against Clayton until the final ends when the opposition drew away to triumph by 16 shots.
John Pentreath’s rink boosted its confidence with a nine-shot victory and Neil Fell’s rink could not reproduce last week’s effort, but played well in a narrow loss.
Clayton 97 d Cranbourne 79. J. Pentreath 28-19, N. Fell 28-31, D. Wise 21-31, G. Imeson 20-32. Cranbourne (3) travelled to Coatesville, but was unable to overcome the local side, losing by 18 shots. Mike Noa’s rink put in the work during the week and earned a nine-shot win.
Matt Boltong’s rink was a little unlucky to lose by three shots after a competitive match.
Coatesville 97 d Cranbourne 79. M. Noa 24-15, M. Boltong 21-24, M. Rowswell 16-23, W. Ballard 18-25.
Cranbourne (4) was involved in a cliffhanger finish and one shot on the final end drew the match against Mulgrave. Cranbourne was well behind at the break, but a big lift on two rinks saw the side finish strongly to share the points.
Allan Dennis and Ian Badger’s rinks were the only winners with margins of 10 and three shots respectively.
Cranbourne 98 drew with Mulgrave Country Club 98. A. Dennis 31-21, I. Badger 28-25, K. Hocking 21-27, R. Sorensen 18-25.
Cranbourne (5) journeyed to Pakenham and came home with a two-shot success courtesy of winning two rinks. Skip Alan Cook was in superb touch to take his team to an 18-shot win and S. Venvilles’ rink’s three-shot triumph ensured victory.
Cranbourne 97 d Pakenham 95. A. Cook 36-18, S. Venville 21-17, K. Davies 25-28, J. MacInnes 15-32.
Cranbourne (6) overcame a persistent Dandenong Rec/RSL to win by 34 shots in a consistent performance. Skip Gerry Winter’s rink starred with a 31-shot win. Bert Romeijn’s rink had a good five-shot win and Theo Van Schlam’s rink tied in a thriller.
Cranbourne 119 d Dandenong Rec/RSL 85. G. Winters 45-14, B. Romeijn 28-23, W. Plumbe 23-25, T. Van Schlam 23-23.
Cranbourne (1) hosted Narre Warren in Ladies’ Pennant and, after a close encounter, fell short by one shot. Cranbourne won only one rink with Kath Dudink’s team performing brilliantly to score a 25-shot win to almost carry the day.
Narre Warren 92 d Cranbourne 91. K. Dudink 41-16, L. Whalley 20-24, L. Kidd 18-24, S. Venville 12-28.
Cranbourne (2) was unable to match Hampton Park, going down by 28 shots. Cranbourne won two rinks, but big losses on the other rinks resulted in the loss.
Hampton Park 102 d Cranbourne 74. Keysborough 96 d Cranbourne 88.25. Somerville 52 d Cranbourne 29.
