HAPPY Birthday to blue!
In its first toe-tapping year, the Cranbourne Blue Light Disco entertained thousands of disco dancers and earned a nomination in the City of Casey’s Australia Day awards.
And as Deborah Conway famously sings It’s Only The Beginning.
On the third Saturday night of every month except December, students from grades four to eight dance the night away at the Cranbourne Public Hall.
In 12 months, the Blue Light Disco has grown from a gathering of a dozen or so children, to a premier party regularly accommodating more than 300 people.
The next Blue Light Disco will be-bop into action at 6pm on 16 August and the group’s annual general meeting is scheduled for 20 August.
Committee president Debbie Nobbs said event organisers were looking forward to reviewing the first year of operation.
“Every month, the disco gets bigger and better,” she said.
“Young people love coming to have fun in a safe and supervised environment and parents support the event because of the same reasons.”
“Before discos, parents ring me so I can reassure them that the party is safe.”
A professional DJ armed with the latest music ensures the young crowd is always entertained and the $8 entry fee represents value for money, according to Ms Nobbs.
“$8 for three hours of fun is an affordable social activity. There aren’t many things kids can do for $8 these days,” she said.
“The kids can also win great prizes from a number of local businesses that support the event.”
In January, the City of Casey recognised the Cranbourne Blue Light Disco with a highly commended in the Australia Day Awards ‘Event of the Year’ category.
Ms Nobbs said the committee was dedicated, supportive and fun loving.
“When this all started, no-one had any special skills or training, just heaps of enthusiasm,” she said.
“We are like a big family with lots of friends, including the Berwick-Narre Warren Blue Light Disco committee, councillor Steve Beardon and the Cranbourne police.”
