A TOORADIN woman was rushed to hospital after her drink was spiked at a Berwick nightspot on Saturday night.
The 22yearold woman, who wants to remain anonymous, had been drinking with friends at popular Blitz nightclub on Clyde Road when the incident occurred.
Friends said the woman complained of feeling lightheaded before collapsing.
She was helped outside by security staff where she began hyperventilating and suffered muscle spasms.
The woman was taken by ambulance to the Dandenong Hospital where doctors confirmed she had been drugged.
The woman said she was lucky the night didn’t end up worse and she was reluctant to venture out again.
“It was really scary,” she said. “It’s never happened to anyone I know before and I didn’t think it would happen to me. I was just lucky I was with people who looked after me and didn’t end up somewhere I didn’t know how I got there.”
Police said drink spiking was a growing problem that could have potentially deadly consequences.
Detective Sergeant Larry Grimshaw of Cranbourne CIU warned partygoers to be vigilant with drinks when at nightclubs and pubs.
He encouraged people not to leave drinks unattended or put them down.
“If you need to leave your drink, get a friend to watch it,” he said.
“Buy bottled drinks instead of drinking from glasses and watch for any change in the appearance of your drink.
“Most drugs will make the drink go fizzy, cloudy or discoloured.
“The most important thing is to make sure your drink is on you at all times.”
Sergeant Gavin Buchan said people most commonly spiked drinks to rape or rob a person.
He said drink spiking was a serious offence that could result in criminal charges.
“Definitely report drink spiking to police and we will investigate the matter further,” he said. “It is a serious offence to spike drinks or introduce drugs to another person.”
Blitz management declined to comment.
