NICOLE O’Connor had always dreamed of marriage, children and a happy family.
After tying the knot at age 22, the Cranbourne woman thought the rest would follow.
She never expected that three years later, she would still be trying to become pregnant.
“My periods had always been irregular since I was 13. I had every test under the sun to find out why, but it wasn’t until I had an ultrasound some years later that they discovered what was wrong with me,” she said.
Nicole was told she suffered from Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, a hormonal condition affecting reproductive health that is often related to being overweight.
“I was 22 and just married when I found out. I had wanted to try for a family and never thought it would be a problem.
“I was under the impression that when I wanted babies I would just have them.
“Being 22, it didn’t really hit home what it was. I still thought I was normal,” she said.
Her devastation led her to join The Big Girls’ Group, a four-month lifestyle and weight management program that she said gave her a new outlook on life.
“I was terrified when I found out I may never have children. I thought I’d never be able to start a family.
“My IVF specialist referred me to the Big Girls’ Group and the support and knowledge I gained was invaluable,” she said.
Nicole said the program involved twice-weekly sessions covering areas such as nutrition, lifestyle and exercise, stress management, fertility issues, polycystic ovarian issues and gynaecological problems.
“Everyone in the group was overweight. I’ve been large since I was a child. I’ve constantly tried to lose weight — you name it I’ve tried it.
“Losing weight was the major focus of the group because it helps the chances of falling pregnant and keeps the body regular.
“After taking part in the group, I will not take no for an answer. I know I’m going to fall pregnant. It will happen.
“I just take each month as it comes. I have to have hope and keep trying,” she said.
“I would definitely encourage anyone in the same situation to join The Big Girls’ Group.”
Places are still available for The Big Girls’ Group 2006 program to be held at South Eastern Private Hospital in Noble Park later this month.
