LABRADOR Kita works just as hard stopping crime as her fellow Casey police detectives.
The three-year-old Passive Alert Detector (PAD) dog was busy on Friday night “sniffing out” drug users and sellers in and around some of Casey’s popular nightspots.
Attracting a great deal of attention outside Nightclub 1422 in Lauderdale Road, Narre Warren, Kita and the Casey Response Team patrolled through car parks, club entry lines and surrounding streets.
“She’s a gun dog, this one,” Senior Constable Dave Gray said.
“If a person has recently used illegal substances or has them in their possession, Kita will lead me straight to them.
“While she may look like your average pet labrador, she has achieved some outstanding results, along with the other drug dogs in the PAD Dog Unit, leading to numerous drug arrests across the state,” he said.
Operation coordinator Acting Sergeant Justin Cornford of the Casey Response Unit said further drug-related operations would be carried out.
“We believe that a police presence in and around popular nightspots will deter the sale of drugs in Casey and we will continue with both high-profile and covert drug detection operations,” Acting Sgt Cornford said.
Casey Inspector Bob Hill said more than 30 people had been arrested since last October.
