CRANBOURNE’S newly formed U3A (University of the Third Age) group is sailing strong, according to club president Bev Wood.
Mrs Wood said the club already had 51 members since its establishment less than a month ago and its classes had received rave reviews throughout the community.
“To have that many members to start off with is fantastic.
“Our classes started two weeks ago and have proved very popular,” she said.
Mrs Wood said she would love to see more participants in the choir group, which meets every Monday between 2pm and 3pm at the Uniting Church in Lesdon Avenue, Cranbourne.
“Also on Monday afternoon our tai chi group meets at the same time as the choir in the church hall.
“On Wednesday morning we have a parchment craft group and on the second and fourth Wednesday afternoon we have a genealogy group that meets from 1pm to 3pm in the Uniting Church hall,” she said.
Mrs Wood encouraged members to broaden their language skills in the Italian group, which meets every Friday afternoon except the fourth Friday of the month from 1pm to 3pm at the Cranbourne Community Centre.
“We also have a creative writing group and craft group that meet at the community centre on the first and third Friday afternoons from 1pm to 3pm, where many and varied craft activities take place.
“Our gardening group will be starting in a week or two and we have also had an offer of a tutor for folk art, so we will be able to start this class for anyone interested,” she said.
Mrs Wood said the group held an open meeting for all members and prospective members on the fourth Friday of each month, as a chance to get together for a coffee and chat.
She said the group was still looking for volunteer leaders for other activities and called on locals to offer their services.
Annual membership of the U3A Cranbourne is $35.
All classes/groups are free to attend and members can attend as many activities as they like.
