A STEINER playgroup, the first of its kind in the region, has started up in Cranbourne.
The program, which has been trialed since the start of the term, has been given a more permanent place by Casey Council.
The classes take place at the Camms Road Maternal Health Centre in Cranbourne once a week on Fridays.
Playgroup facilitator Roger Richards set up the playgroup in the area believing there was a need, even though he lives on the other side of the city.
“There is nothing from Mornington to Belgrave,” Mr Richards said. “There is a big need in this area.”
Steiner education at the playgroup level promotes creative thinking and focuses around the environment, mood, routine, rituals, toys, songs and stories.
Mr Richards said they tried to use all organic and natural materials for the children’s toys and playthings and encouraged creative thinking through imaginative storytelling.
He said they also tried to avoid popular culture as much as possible, and did not encourage children to wear designer clothes.
“We like to keep it simple and wholesome,” Mr Richards said.
“And even though it is in a health centre, we try to make it as homely as possible.”
The playgroup runs on Friday mornings. For more information, contact Roger on 9754 7210.
