MOTORISTS travelling between Cranbourne North and Pearcedale will need to check their speed after the limit was reduced on Westernport Highway.
The new speed limit came into effect last Friday following ongoing road safety concerns.
The limit has been reduced from 100km/h to 90km/h between Cranbourne-Frankston Road and North Road.
Unveiling the new speed signs, Hastings MP Rosy Buchanan said community concerns about road safety in the area had resulted in the speed reduction.
“This is a terrific win for the community. The State Government has listened to residents and acted on their concerns,” Ms Buchanan said.
“Traffic along the Westernport Highway has increased to 20,500 vehicles a day and is expected to reach 26,500 by 2021.
“A large proportion of this traffic is heavy freight vehicles such as LPG tankers travelling between Melbourne and the port of Hastings, which has lead to ongoing community concerns regarding safety for motorists.”
Ms Buchanan said VicRoads would continue to work with local councils, Victoria Police, local residents and other stakeholders to monitor safety along the Westernport Highway.
“This is an opportunity to remind motorists that, regardless of the speed limit, it is the responsibility of all drivers to select a speed at or below the limit which is safe and appropriate to the road conditions,” she said.
