MOVE over FOX and NOVA, 3CSC 95.9FM is on the airways and becoming a popular fixture on Thursday and Friday lunchtime at Cranbourne Secondary College.
Information technology, media and communications teacher George Massouris first thought of introducing a radio station to his media studies class after noticing that his daughter’s primary school in Patterson Lakes had its own program.
“I thought it was a great way to integrate learning with hands on experience,” Mr Massouris said.
“It follows on perfectly from the pod-casting unit we have for our Year 10 students, they can actually broadcast the work they have done.” When approached by Mr Massouris, principal Yvonne Watts and the school council decided that introducing the program to the school was worthwhile and made the money available to build infrastructure for the station.
The school’s station can broadcast within a three-kilometre radius from the school grounds.
Mr Massouris said that this year was only a trial year for the station. He said he hoped it would grow into a much more professional and successful model next year.
“We are trying to get some radio personalities to come in and have a chat with the students,” he said.
Next year Mr Massouris plans for the station to broadcast five lunchtimes a week and to play pre-recorded programs over the weekend.
“This year we are limited to two lunchtimes a week and the program is only available to Year 10 media students, we want to open it up next year so that anyone with an interest can join in,” he said.
Currently Mr Massouris describes the radio studio as a humble beginning.
“We’re hoping that the community will offer some kind of sponsorship as we grow and in turn help us out with things like an ‘on air’ light, making the studio soundproof or even some help with the technical aspect,” Mr Massouris said.
