STUDENTS celebrated cultures from all over the world at Coral Park Primary School last Friday.
The day was part of the Hampton Park school’s Cultural Diversity Week celebrations, in which children dressed in national costumes, created world displays and learnt about African drumming.
Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley also showed up on the day to present a cheque to the school on behalf of Premier Steve Bracks to fund the celebrations.
“It is the diversity of our communities that have made our state such a vibrant and exciting place to live,” she said.
“Victoria has a proud history of welcoming and supporting immigrants. Many of them chose to come to places like Hampton Park and Hallam and become our neighbours and friends.
“Cultural Diversity Week is a great opportunity for us to reflect upon the fact that we are all different, but all the same.”
The students enjoyed dressing up in national costumes, and created a World Expo with displays about countries across the globe.
A visit from Zazu, an African drumming group, was also a big hit.
School principal David Hinton said Coral Park was a very multicultural primary school and so it was important that students learnt to accept and embrace other cultures.
“Having a whole week of celebrations encourages the children to be proud of their heritage and to share their traditions with the other students,” Mr Hinton said.
