Next year’s Hampton Park Primary School captains Josh, Josh, Dulmini and Samtitha celebrate the announcement of funding for a new stormwater harvesting system.

HAMPTON Park Primary School has received a $42,000 grant to help save water.
The Federal Government Community Water Grant will go towards refurbishing the students’ toilets and installing a stormwater harvesting system.
Assistant principal Connie vanderVoort said an audit completed by the Planet Savers/Sustainable School Water Auditor determined that by replacing the single flush-toilet systems with efficient low-flush models the school would reduce its water use by 438 kilolitres each year.
The school would also save more water by installing a harvesting system to pump stormwater from a main stormwater drain to a storage tank and eventually to the toilets, thus replacing all mains water required for toilet flushing in the student toilet block.
This project aims to reduce the school’s total mains water consumption by 74 per cent from 1302kL per year to 334kL per year.
“This project will also have the substantial benefit of educating current and future students on the importance of saving water,” Ms vanderVoort said.
